After Rejecting DOT Plan, Bay Ridge Community Board Supports Bike Lanes

DOT’s proposal for a bike lane on Bay Ridge Parkway, which would have preserved all travel lanes and parking, was scrapped after local politicians blasted the concept and Brooklyn Community Board 10 voted against it, 32-8, in May 2011. At the time, the future looked bleak for bike lanes in Bay Ridge.

Paris: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive offers guilt-free, zero-emission supercar fun... for $537K

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive

The folks at Mercedes-Benz must have a guilty conscience when it comes to the SLS AMG supercar. Why else would the German automaker follow up the snarling V8-powered debut of the modern gullwing with the SLS AMG E-Cell, and now the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive? While the retina-searing E-Cell was a merely prototype, the vehicle you see here is a production version, and can be yours for a cool half a million bucks.

Mercedes-Benz says this electrified gullwing is the most powerful vehicle in the AMG stable. With four electric motors - one at each wheel - producing a combined 740 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque, the SLS Electric Drive can rocket to 62 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds. For reference, the conventionally powered SLS AMG GT puts out 583 hp, but can do the 0-60 sprint in 3.6 seconds.

The all-electric SLS employs a KERS system that was developed with help from the Mercedes-AMG Formula One team. A specially designed wall box charging unit has been designed that allows a customer's home to possess the same three-hour quick charge capabilities as a public station. Without the wall box, the EV supercar charges in about 20 hours.

If you can afford the €416,500 ($537,930) entry fee, throwing down the extra dough for a wall box should not be an issue. Mercedes-Benz calls the SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive "the most exclusive and dynamic way to drive an electric car." With the blue chrome finish, we would also add "eye-catching," to that description. See for yourself in the accompanying gallery.

Heikki Kovalainen - 16th: "For me that was a good race until the safety cars. We decided to stay out but when we restarted for the second time I'd probably been out too long and the tyres were starting to give up. Report: MN woman accused of making nephew ride in trunk to protect her Lexus' seats

We all know that water and leather don't mix, but we also know (or at least we should) that kids in trunks don't mix, either. A woman in Minnesota is in hot water after allegedly making her 11-year-old nephew ride home in the trunk of her Lexus after riding a water ride at a local amusement park.

On August 23, witnesses in the parking lot of Valleyfair Amusement Park reported seeing the child climb into the trunk of the car before the car drove off. By the time police had caught up with Susan Marie McCarty, 38, and her Lexus, she had already dropped her nephew off, but she had admitted to police that she put him back there because she didn't want him to get water on her car's leather. She justified her actions by telling police that she left the center pass-through open allowing air conditioning to get into the trunk.

The boy's grandmother, 14-year-old sister and another child passenger were also in the vehicle, and while the grandmother was "uneasy" about him riding in the trunk, she didn't want to question the aunt's decision.

According to reports, McCarty was charged with gross-misdemeanor child endangerment, and, if convicted, could face up to a year in prison and as much as $3,000 in fines.

Vincent and Rhyne victorious in Japan

After a thrilling opening race at Suzuka during week one, RSR drivers took a few days off and toured Japan as they prepared for the “Hadaka Matsuri 30 Okayama” at the Okayama full course in Mimasaka, Okayama. Not content to take in the nighttime sights in the Shinjuku district or the famous shopping district in Ginza, several drivers visited the National Museum in Ueno, Tokyo before heading to Okayama to begin pre-race testing. Unseasonably good weather allowed fans to enjoy the race weekend and gave drivers plenty of track time to learn the tricky 11 corner, 2.314 layout. Brad Vincent dominated the Class A HPD qualifying session and won his second pole of the season with a lap time of 1:19.159. Les Turner (2nd) was the only other driver to [...]

Senna expects strong outing in Singapore

Bruno Senna thinks Williams can look forward to one of its more competitive outings in Singapore this weekend. The high-downforce nature of the Marina Bay circuit should play well to the strengths of the FW34. And, after Senna scored a single point for the team at the Italian Grand Prix a fortnight ago, he is positive that an even bigger haul should be possible this time out.

FIM unhappy over Misano start mess

FIM president Vito Ippolito has criticised Misano's race directors following the chaotic start procedure that contributed to Dani Pedrosa's early exit from the San Marino Grand Prix. Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor with lights on - front three-quarter view

Recently the Caledonia, Minn. Police Department took delivery of a new Ford Crown Victoria (curiously, CV production ended in September of 2011) police cruiser. This got the attention of not only the local criminals, but it apparently piqued the interest of the Houston County Sheriff's Department, too.

Just like in high school, when another kid gets a new car, there's gonna be talk about whose car is faster. So according to reports, a Caledonia officer and a Houston County deputy lined up on a local airport runway to pit the county's Dodge Charger against the city's new Ford Crown Vic Police Interceptor. We imagine there were roaring engines, squealing tires and clouds of taxpayer-financed smoke.

Did we mention the two lawmen were on duty? Well, because of that, the Caledonia officer piloting the Ford won a free month of suspension. The Dodge-driving deputy got away without so much as a warning. Perhaps that was winner's award. Neither side is saying, though, who won or what speeds were attained.

A former Caledonia commissioner reportedly ratted out the street-racing officers and later alleged there is a "culture of, quite frankly, bad behavior" at the sheriff's department.

In his deputy's defense, Houston County Cheif Deputy Scott Yeiter says the incident was "an employee coaching session."

Official: Mercedes-Benz adds B-Class Electric Drive to Paris debuts

We already knew the next-generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class would be getting an all-electric variant, but instead of wearing the E-Cell name, it shall be dubbed Electric Drive. As a matter of fact, all future electric models from Mercedes-Benz, Smart and AMG will carry the Electric Drive name.

A thinly disguised version of the car will be on display next week at the 2012 Paris Motor Show as the Mercedes-Benz Concept B-Class Electric Drive, but what we're looking at here is likely the real deal of what will hit the grid in 2014. According to previous reports, the electric powertrain in the B-Class Electric Drive will be based on a system devolved by Tesla. Mercedes says its Concept B-Class Electric Drive uses a 134-horsepower electric motor that can pump out around 229 pound-feet of torque and deliver a range of 124 miles from its lithium-ion battery.

In addition to the Concept B-Class, Mercedes will also use the Paris stage for the world debut of the SLS AMG Electric Drive and Smart ForTwo Brabus Electric Drive. Scroll down for the official press release.
