Report: Early sales show Fiat 500 going strong in Texas, manual transmission take rate high
Filed under: Car Buying, Budget, Hatchback, Fiat
When the Fiat 500 launched here in the U.S., we didn't expect Texas to be one of the vehicle's largest markets. But according to Ward's Auto, that's exactly the case. Fiat boasts a total of 10 franchises in the land of cowboy boots and ten gallon hats - a figure that's only bested by the likes of California and tied with New York and Florida. The Italian automaker's North American boss, Laura Soave, says that a host of green and tech-industry workers, sprawling suburban living and the fourth-largest metropolitan center in the country in Houston, Texas is the perfect place for the 500.
Even more surprising is word that most Fiat dealers are ordering up the 500 with an impressive manual transmission take rate. In a country where most drivers believe their left foot is only good for mounting and dismounting their Hoveround, a full 70 percent of 500 dealer orders have been placed for manual transmission models - a figure that has surprised Fiat execs. Is there hope for the row-your-own way of life, or are these suckers destined to languish on dealer lots? Let's hope for the former.

Report: Supreme Court to hear automotive GPS tracking case
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Police/Emergency
The Supreme Court is set to rule on whether or not law enforcement officers need a warrant in order to track a suspect's vehicle with a GPS device. The case centers around Antoine Jones, whose vehicle was bugged for a month without his consent or a go-ahead from the justice department. The police have argued that such tracking shouldn't require a warrant because the location of Jones' vehicle on public streets is public knowledge. Advocates arguing against that stance say that the comprehensive surveillance constitutes an unjust invasion of privacy.
No one is disputing the fact that Jones was, in fact, selling cocaine when his vehicle was monitored.
Lower courts have sided with Jones' attorneys on the privacy issue in the past, though there is a precedent for allowing evidence obtained through warrantless GPS tracking to be upheld. The issue seems to be exactly how long law enforcement continues the tracking. Either way, law enforcement, prosecution and defense attorneys will all have a close eye on the outcome of the Jones case.

Video: Ride along with Monster Tajima as he rockets up Pikes Peak
Filed under: Motorsports, Videos, Suzuki
Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima's 9:51.278 run up Pikes Peak was simply amazing to watch. We were fortunate enough to see it in person, and we've shown you still photos of the record-breaking event. This was one of those "You had to be there" moments in motorsports. Still, don't fret if you didn't make the trek to the 14,115-foot summit, because GoPro installed enough cameras to capture every angle of Monster's run, and then some.
We spoke with the GoPro team as we rode in the media van down the mountain. They have quite a job of editing ahead of them. Still, they managed to get one video out that requires no mucking about. A camera was mounted on top of Tajima's 2011 Suzuki SX4 Hill Climb Special, and the footage is excellent. On the tarmac sections, the video almost seems sped up, but that's what 910 horses can do.
Want to ride along with Monster from the green to the checkered? Click past the jump to watch a video that will keep you entertained for nearly 10 minutes.

Minis on Top tackles the Mt. Washington Auto Road, we tag along for the drive
Driving the Mt. Washington Auto Road is an eight-mile journey that invokes a range of emotions. The start of the ascent fills one with excitement, while the first views into the distant New England surroundings move you to a sense of awe. Transition from tarmac to dirt, however, and awe gives way to trepidation. This is a narrow road with two directions of traffic, no protective barriers and a long drop-off that sits uncomfortably close to your car's tires.
Still, this a must-drive road, and we were delighted when Mini reached out with an invitation to join them on a trip to the top. Our ride was a 2011 Mini Cooper Clubman with fresh rubber and a manual transmission, and our expectations for the experience climbed into the clouds. Would the compact Clubman prove to be an ideal chariot for this New Hampshire ascension adventure?

Rumormill: Five-door Hyundai Veloster in the works?
Filed under: Budget, Performance, Etc., Hatchback, Hyundai, Australia, Rumormill
Hyundai may be working on a more traditional five-door hatch version of the company's new Veloster. The Australian site Car Sales Network recently spoke to Eunjuu Shin, the manager for overseas product planning for Hyundai, who said that his company is working on a Veloster with four doors for global markets. Other suits within the Korean automaker have neither confirmed nor denied the news, saying that right now, the manufacturer is focused on the launch of the two-plus-one door configuration.
So, how likely is it that Hyundai is working on a five-door Veloster? On the one hand, a slightly more functional version of the vehicle might appeal to more buyers, though with the same 1.6-liter direct-injection four-cylinder as the Accent, we could easily imagine too much product overlap between the two siblings. The Veloster is set to touch down in the United States later this year, so don't expect to hear too much more about a five-door version until well after the vehicle's launch date.

World's oldest Bentley up for auction
Filed under: Classics, Convertible, Auctions, Bentley
We're used to seeing chassis numbers on collector cars go on for several digits. But not this one. This one is chassis number 3. That's it. And that's because this is the oldest production Bentley in existence.
Following EXP 1 and EXP 2 - the former of which is no longer with us, the latter kept in Bentley's corporate collection - this 1921 Bentley 3-Litre was the first production model to leave the factory. And it's in immaculate condition, despite having been raced through much of its life. In fact, while Bentley's own EXP 2 has had many parts replaced by now, Chassis No. 3 here is all original, down to the aluminum coachwork, brass brightwork, engine and gearbox.
This extremely rare example of automotive history is going up on the auction block at Pebble Beach in August under the auspices of Gooding & Company, along with an exceptional motorcycle we'll be bringing you shortly. So stay tuned and don't forget to check out the high-resolution images in the gallery for a closer look.

Saab unable to obtain short-term funding, pay employee wages
Filed under: Etc., Europe, Plants/Manufacturing, Saab, Earnings/Financials
Saab hasn't been able to secure the short-term funding it needs. As a result, the Swedish automaker has been unable to pay its employees their wages, according to a statement released by the company.
Saab says that it is currently investigating ways to secure the funds necessary to continue operations, including selling all of its assets and leasing them back. That option had been discussed in the past but fell to the wayside as discussions with various Chinese partners ramped up. Even with that option back on the table, Saab says that there's no guarantee that the company will be able to secure the necessary funding.
If that happens, Saab could go permanently dark.
The automaker has secured mid-term financing thanks to a deal with Chinese Distributor Pang Da, but if the company can't keep its workers paid right now, that may not mean too much. Hit the jump to check out the brief press release.

Report: Think Global files for bankruptcy
Filed under: Coupe, Europe, Government/Legal, Earnings/Financials, Electric
When Ener1 abruptly ended its four-year-long deal with Think Global, saying that its investment was "impaired," we had reason to worry. Now comes word that the struggles continue to mount at Think Global and that the automaker has filed for bankruptcy. Again.
According to a statement released by Ener1, Think Global will liquidate its assets in an attempt to pay back its creditors. Apparently, Ener1 has stepped in and is currently in charge of recovering some $32 million in unpaid loans and accounts receivable from Think Global.
Ener1 spokesman Brian Sinderson, told the Indiana Business Journal that "the amount [Ener1 is owed] could change based on the extent to which funds are recovered as a result of the liquidation of Think Global."
The IBJ could not reach Think spokesman Brendan Prebo for comment on this developing story.

Video: Balloon Boy's dad full of hot air over his new truck bed system
Filed under: Aftermarket, Truck, Videos
The name Richard Heene ring a bell? He's the man behind the "Balloon Boy" hoax from 2009. Heene is also the man behind a new product for pickup trucks, which is called the Heeneduty Truck TransFormer. What's most interesting about it? The thing is actually pretty damn interesting.
Heene knows that some folks don't like the permanence of heavy-duty equipment in the bed of their trucks. The Truck TransFormer gets around that by serving as portable loading dock, tool shed, work bench, power scaffold and pretty much anything else you could need when using your truck for work. When you don't need it, you can remove it and tuck it away for later use.
We do have one serious question for Mr. Henne, however. Does the Truck TransFormer somehow lock safely into place? We can see it creating an awfully big mess in an accident...
Would you be willing to shell out nearly $14,000 to put one of these multipurpose babies in the bed of your pickup? You might, after watching the video posted after the jump. A word of caution, though: turn down your computer volume a bit beforehand... Heene can be a wee bit enthusiastic.

Video: Ken Block Gymkhana, tilt-shift edition
Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Toys/Games
We don't know when tilt-shift video will be old and busted, but it isn't today. Ken Block's recent busting-through-boxes DiRT 3 Gymkhana at the Battersea power station rocked hard enough in full scale. It looks even cooler - or perhaps it's just wackier and funnier - shot with a tilt-shift lens so that it looks like a tiny Ken Block is piloting a tiny Escort knocking over tiny boxes. The only thing stranger than the images is the music, which kept us wondering when the Harajuku girls were going to appear. They don't, but the still-awesome Harajuku-free video is after the jump.
