Report: Lotus Ethos plug-in minicar headed to U.S. in 2013?
Filed under: Hybrid, Hatchback, Lotus, Electric
Your dream of owning a $45,000 Lotus plug-in minicar could become a reality in 2013. If that's truly your dream, then you'll be thrilled to know that the extended-range Lotus Ethos will reportedly hit U.S. dealerships in late 2013 as a Model Year 2014 vehicle.
Unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, Lotus' minicar concept, now called the Ethos, will enter the production cycle in 2013. That's official. However, word of the Ethos coming to the U.S. has not been confirmed by the automaker.
In production form, the plug-in Ethos is expected to employ a range-extending 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. Lotus claims the Ethos will have an electric-only range of 37 miles before that range extender swings into action, adding 270 miles of gas-burnin' action. Top speed checks in at a reported 76 miles per hour and the 0 to 62-mph dash takes nine ticks of the second hand.
So, it's time to start gearing up for the possible arrival of a $45,000 plug-in minicar with a Lotus badge. We'd be willing to bet that its steep price tag will be a bit of an issue when it comes to racking up sales here in the States.

Official: Ferrari 458 Spider priced from $257,000
Filed under: Car Buying, Convertible, Performance, Ferrari
The top's already come off, but we're just now getting to the subject of price. Don't get too excited, most of you can't afford it anyway. We're talking about the Ferrari 458 Spider, and it'll cost you at least $257,000 to put one in your climate-controlled garage. Should you have the means, you can place your order starting in January of 2012.
What do you get when you replace $257,000 from your bank account with the Ferrari 458 Spider? A 4.5-liter V8-powered exotic sports car with a roof that disappears so your ears can get closer to aural nirvana. Sure, the fancy folding top covers up the visuals, but we'd take the soundtrack over the artwork any day. Besides, the body lines on the 458 Spider will keep your eyes busy enough as it is.

Official: Caterham confirms development of new sports car range
Caterham has announced that it has founded a separate engineering company that will focus on producing a new line of affordable sports cars. Caterham Technology and Innovation Limited intends to translate the lessons of lightweight performance gleaned from years of building the Caterham Seven into an accessible product for the masses. There's even talk of implementing lightweight materials and high-performance engine tech from the Team Lotus Formula One endeavor. Get excited. CTI even makes it clear that the company's shareholders can expect to see a global product line within the next ten years or so.
In addition to designing and manufacturing light-weight giggle machines, CTI will also make its engineering services available to other manufacturers. While it's likely that the majority of those clients will come from the automotive sector, CTI also intends to woo the aerospace industry as well. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Report: Tesla asks for another loan from the Feds
Filed under: Government/Legal, Tesla, Electric
We haven't heard much from Tesla of late, but that may be because the upstart electric car maker is hard at work getting the Model S to market, as promised, before the end of 2012. The Model S itself is the product of a $465 million loan from the U.S. Department of Energy, but that's not the last round of loans Tesla has its sights set on.
SF Gate reports that Tesla has asked the DoE for another loan. Tesla spokeswoman Khobi Brooklyn reportedly confirmed that the loan application was completed, adding that the money would be used "in our continued mission to make more affordable electric vehicles." Tesla hasn't yet detailed the amount of money that has been requested, nor has it indicated if specific models would be built with the money.
The confirmation of a DoE loan request comes one week after Tesla defended the DoE's $25 billion clean energy loan program in the wake of the Solyndra solar panel bankruptcy scandal. Tesla points out that the Tesla loan resulted in 1,000 jobs and another 1,000 expected in the year ahead.

Video: eBay Motors launches World's Fastest Car Show with Justin Bell
Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Videos, Ford, Celebrities
Justin Bell and eBay Motors have teamed up for a new web-based car show called, fittingly enough, "The World's Fastest Car Show." The premise is pretty straight-forward, with Bell taking to the wheel of some piece of drool-worthy metal in the first half of the show before heading off to an event in the latter half. The inaugural episode features a stint in the delicious Ford Mustang Boss 302 on Mulholland Drive as well as a stop in at Pebble Beach for a peak at the concept lawn.
Bell spends some time with a variety of concepts before deciding that the electrified Porsche 918 RSR is the belle of that particular ball. Race fans will likely recognize Bell as the same champion race driver who has campaigned at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA GT series. "The World's Fastest Car Show" will debut a new episode each week. Hit the jump to check out the first episode for yourself.

First Drive: 2012 Chevrolet Sonic
Filed under: Budget, Sedan, Hatchback, Chevrolet, First Drives
GM Finally Gets the Compact Car Recipe RightWe've met the 2012 Chevy Sonic before. Zach Bowman spent some time in a pre-production model earlier this year and his first impressions were favorable, at least on the autocross course. Now that the Sonic is starting to roll into dealers, it's time to find out if Chevy can deliver what neuvo compact buyers are after: high MPGs, a modicum of utility and a cabin that's more inviting than a GitMo cell.
But naturally, we want more.
Nearly everything new in the B-segment excels at each of those marks and some even provide an entertaining steer in the process. And even though Chevy's marketeers are hoping to offload the Sonic on teens and twenty-somethings - offering the connectivity they crave with the safety and price point their parents demand - the Sonic has to appeal to a broader swath of buyers looking for a budget runabout.
And for the first time ever, Chevy has succeeded. We're just as shocked as you.

Video: Real electric Tron Lifecycle rolls up to suburbia
Filed under: Aftermarket, Etc., Videos, Toys/Games, Motorcycle, Design/Style
It was only a matter of time before someone bent the full brunt of their mechanical might toward creating a full-scale, operational version of the light cycle from Tron: Legacy. That someone just happened to be the crew from Parker Brothers Choppers. Using lithium-ion batteries and a 96-volt electric motor, the guys built a real-life version of the bikes made famous by the first Tron. If that's not enough to pique your interest, they're also giving one of the bikes away to one very lucky fan.
If you want to claim a light cycle as your very own, all you have to do is craft a brief, three-minute video describing why you deserve to take the cycle home as your very own, don't do anything illegal or dangerous while filming it and get chosen out of the hordes of other sci-fi fans itching to get their paws on the machine. It's that simple. Hit the jump to check out a video of the light cycle whirring around a mall parking lot, and head over to the Parker Brothers site for more information on the giveaway.
