Spy Shots: Audi TT mule shows little, promises much

Next-gen Audi TT mule spy shot by CarPix

When we last checked in with the little bit of speculation there's been on the coming, third-generation Audi TT, rumors said the TT would move upmarket to make MSRP space below for a mid-engined Audi R4. With the R4's future in question, who knows how the TT will play it, but other scuttlebutt says that the TT will be on the MQB platform, will combine first- and second-generation designs and be lighter and more driver oriented.

The snappers at CarPix have encountered a TT mule testing in the snowy north and unfortunately, it doesn't give much more away. The wheelbase has grown - notice the hood shutline is uneven with the front arch, and the arches are said to look wider. The exhaust was described as "more mature," but that could be down to numerous mule-related reasons.

There were hints that we'd see it at last year's Tokyo Auto Show, but obviously that didn't happen. Based on the car in these spy shots, it could be a while yet.

The iRacing.com V8 Supercar Series presented by Big Pond came to America last week, with a thirty-lap event at Watkins Glen. The track was set in its Cup configuration, so the large, heavy Ford Falcon would need to negotiate the Inner Loop chicane. As has become the custom this season, V8SC Americas kicked off the week with the first official race, at 02:45 GMT Friday (9:45 PM EST). 29 sim racers made the grid, strong enough attendance for the race to split. Canadian Curtis Chippeway won, for the second straight week, with Charlotte-based Jeremy Burris and Californian Ray Butcher completing the podium. Teased: Gumpert shows second Geneva teaser, will debut two new Apollo models

Gumpert Geneva Teaser

The Geneva Motor Show sets itself apart from the other international auto shows with a gathering of Europe's smaller boutique manufacturers and tuners. One of those is Gumpert, the German builder of supercars that have impressive performance and a polarizing appearance. Gumpert has had a strong showing at Geneva the last couple years, debuting the 750-horsepower Apollo S in 2010 and the coachbuilt Tornante last year.

Gumpert has big plans for this year's Geneva Motor Show, and back in November released a shadowy teaser showing a new supercar that would be revealed in March. Now that the show is just days away, Gumpert has released another teaser (seen above), and a few more details, including the fact that two Apollo models will be making their debut. First is the Apollo R, which Gumpert says is a "a true racecar with the brute power of up to 860 horsepower." Second is the Apollo Enraged, an exclusive model limited to just three examples that will be the "strongest Apollo that Gumpert has ever set on the road."

Gumpert also hinted at a time of 7:11.75 - no doubt a Nürburgring lap set by one of the aforementioned cars. Could the German supercar maker have nicked the production car lap record set by the Dodge Viper ACR back in September? We'll have to wait to find out. Check back on March 6th and 7th for official details and photos for both cars, as well as the rest of our Geneva Motor Show coverage.

Lexus LFA

We can attest to the joys of driving the Lexus LFA, having spent several days this past fall becoming addicted to the 4.8-liter V10 and race-bred suspension. We aren't the only ones who have developed an affection for the $400,000 Lexus supercar, though. Alex Wurz, former Formula 1 driver and two-time Le Mans winner, recently got behind the wheel of the LFA and seemed duly impressed.

Not one to just take the LFA out for a lazy drive, Wurz makes proper use of all 552 horsepower and 9,000 rpm running the Estoril Circuit in Portugal. After a few laps of pushing the supercar around the track, Wurz heaps praise on the LFA for its super-aggressive looks, neutral handling, and the sound of the downshifts from the V10.

If you want to see a video of the Lexus LFA being driven the way it was intended, then hit the jump and turn up your speakers.

Video: SRT's race-only Viper ACR-X laps Nrburgring in 7:03.058

Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR-X at the Nurburgring

Dodge, or rather SRT (we're still getting used to it being its own brand), has been busy teasing us with the new Viper that will be unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April, but that doesn't mean it's completely done flaunting the performance capabilities of the old model. Only a few short months ago, SRT released a video of the Viper ACR reclaiming the lap record at the Nürburgring for a production car with a time of 7:12.13, taking the title away from the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition.

Now the Viper Club of America has released a new video of the race-only Viper ACR-X tackling the Green Hell, and the result is even more impressive. The V10-powered spec racer lapped the circuit in just 7:03.058, more than nine seconds quicker than its roadgoing brother. It makes us wonder when we'll start seeing six-minute lap times at the Nürburgring.

You can see a video of the impressive lap after the jump, including real-time stats like g-force and downforce included in the footage.

Ricciardo: Red Bull no extra pressure

Daniel Ricciardo says the fates of past Red Bull proteges who have not lived up to expectations do not put any added pressure on him - as he is already extremely hard on himself. Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne are moving into the Toro Rosso race seats this season after predecessors Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari became the latest Red Bull young drivers dropped for not making the grade, as Tonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed had been before them. But asked by AUTOSPORT if Red Bull and Toro Rosso's reputation for ruthlessness awed him, Ricciardo insisted it did not create any pressure that he would not have been putting on himself already

Report: Small town up in arms over armored transport vehicle purchase [w/video]

Lenco BearCat

Despite tight budgets at all levels of government, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is still giving local law enforcement agencies military vehicles. According to a report in The Huffington Post, a small town in New Hampshire was set to receive an armored personnel vehicle before one local resident launched a petition drive to block the acquisition.

The Keene, NH, police department was going to get its own Lenco BearCat, a vehicle the town's mayor reportedly described as a "tank." However, citizens in the town of 23,000 revolted, according to the article, with nearly 100 of them packing a city council meeting in opposition. Critics said the vehicle promoted violence, and cited a promotional video for the BearCat that shows gun-wielding cops using one of the armored trucks to knock down the door of a house and spray tear gas inside. The issue is scheduled to come up again at next month's meeting.

A $285,933 grant from DHS would pay for the eight-ton military truck. The Huffington Post cites a report from the Center for Investigative Reporting stating that $34 billion of similar grants have been issued since Sept. 11, 2001.

A Lenco spokesman criticized some of the citizens who spoke out against his firm's vehicle, calling them "crazy" and saying, "When a Lenco Bearcat shows up at a crime scene where a suicidal killer is holding hostages, it doesn't show up with a cannon. It shows up with a negotiator. Our trucks save lives," according to the article.

Click past the jump to watch the Lenco BearCat promotional video, featuring AC-DC's "Thunderstruck."

Study: J.D. Power reports vehicle dependability has substantially improved

2010 Lexus LS460 Sport

Remember the days of planned obsolescence? They're over. The latest J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study shows a 13-percent improvement in new car dependability over the first three years of ownership. The latest sample of 2009 model year vehicles shows the lowest rate of problems since the study's inception in 1990.

The big winner was the Lexus LS, which had the fewest reported problems in the study. Lexus was the highest rated brand as well, followed by Porsche, Cadillac, Toyota and Scion. J.D. Power says 25 of 32 automotive brands showed improved dependability, with six declining and one remaining the same.

While J.D. Power was pleased to see automakers producing high quality cars despite the economic disaster unfolding around them three years ago, it did note that some brands are still not getting credit for building reliable vehicles. "During the past four years, models from Buick, Cadillac, Ford, Hyundai and Lincoln have achieved consistently strong levels of dependability," the company's release stated, "but still have relatively high proportions of new-vehicle buyers expressing reliability concerns."

To read the full press release, click past the jump.
