Report: Fiat 500 least safe vehicle to drive according to insurance website [w/video]
Filed under: Coupe, SUV, Truck, Safety, Videos, Hatchback, GMC, Fiat
When the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crashed a 2012 Fiat 500, the little car got the best scores in all categories. It's a safe car, then, right?
"If safety is a priority, you should avoid the smallest cars," advises Russ Rader, spokesperson for IIHS. "Weight counts. Smaller, lighter cars are safer than they used to be, but all things being equal, people riding in bigger, heavier vehicles get more protection in crashes."
That's why, despite its near-perfect crash-test score, the Fiat 500 is No. 1 on Insure.com's list of worst vehicles for protecting passengers from injuries. In an accident with a larger object, the Fiat's safety cage and array of air bags do what they can to protect passenges, but like eggs in a coffee can, the passengers get thrown about and smashed up.
If the Fiat 500 is like a coffee can, then a fullsize GMC pickup (which tops the website's list of vehicles best at protecting passengers) would be a 50-gallon barrel. In a collision between the two, the barrel of eggs will win every time. The GMC Sierra 1500 is rated best at protecting passengers by Insure.com, but IIHS rated it just average in the side impact test and marginal in the roof strength test. Second place on Insure.com's best list is the Porsche Cayenne, which has not been tested by IIHS. The third through fifth place spots go to the GMC Yukon, Sierra 2500 and Terrain.
The listings are the result of Insure.com's analysis of personal injury protection and medical payment claims which affect what car owners are charged for insurance.
Check out videos of the IIHS crash test of the Fiat 500 as well as the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 below.

While DOT Is Removing Signs, How About Yanking These Pedestrian Warnings?
The Times reported yesterday that DOT is in the process of taking down all of the city’s “Don’t Honk” signs. Ostensibly the signs are being removed in tandem with efforts to declutter the visual environment. For better or worse, it’s also a tacit admission that they probably don’t do very much good.

Video: Runway Rumble: Nissan GT-R, Ducati 1098 and Lamborghini Reventon Roadster battle it out
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Videos, Lamborghini, Nissan, Motorcycle, Luxury
One 2.5-mile runway, three different ways to take off: a Ducati 1098, a tuned Nissan GT-R with 580 horsepower and a launch control upgrade, and a Lamborghini Reventon Roadster. You'd naturally expect the Ducati to assert it's lightweight, high-horsepower authority in these matters, but with more than two miles to run, the ride that gets the jump at the line isn't always the one that gets the win.
That comes in especially handy for the Lamborghini, which suffers from a bad start in the first race and just looks plain ordinary in the second, until it finds redemption. You can see how it all goes down in the video below.

ETC: Infographic: The history of the garage
Filed under: Etc.
Infographics are the energy bars of information delivery - not bad for you, lots of tasty calories and just enough to get you by, but not so heavy on the lasting sustenance. Yet because they skip all the boring bits they can make just about any subject interesting, and that's how we've come to know all kinds of interesting things that we'll shortly forget about the humble home garage.
The IFA Insurance Company lays out the stats on the domestic carport, from its origins in the word "garer" and as a place for horses, to being covered for feature stories and magazines and a source of envy for homeowners. Oh, and the US alone has 82 million homes with a garage - enough to store every car made in the world last year, with a few garages left over to fix a few million of those cars.
You'll find more factoids in the full infographic below.

Report: Gumball 3000 team planning to run Batman Tumbler and bespoke supercar
Filed under: Performance, Etc., Specialty
The 2013 Gumball 3000 rally - this year is the 15th anniversary of the supercar cavalcade - will begin on March 18 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Among the 120 go-faster-mobiles at the starting line will be two rides that just might pierce the ennui of the loaded leisure class: a replica of Batman's Tumbler and a one-off supercar.
The two gents of Team Galag, from Saudi Arabia, have put the ideas and money behind it. This will be their third year running the Gumball, and from the humble beginnings of a Porsche 911 Turbo in 2011 they went on to a Lamborghini Aventador and Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster last year. The Tumbler is being built by Parker Brothers Concepts, the company that constructs vehicles for the SyFy Channel's Dream Machines show.
As for that one-off supercar, it's called the TG1 for the time being and building it has been "a decision that we have regretted ever since." Not that there won't be a TG2, mind you. They've promised updates on the build, so we can safely say that it's not the diamond-trimmed LykanHypersport. Which is a good thing.
If you want to look out for them, the Gumball route runs through Stockholm, Turku (Finland), Helsinki, St. Petersburg, Tallinn, Riga, Warsaw and Vienna on its way to the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix the weekend of May 23.

Video: VW Super Bowl teaser with Jimmy Cliff is like a less-mean Tosh.0 Web Redemption
Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Volkswagen, Celebrities
Reggae super-duper-star and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jimmy Cliff has been using music to send positive vibes out into the universe for decades now, so its no surprise that his message on behalf of Volkswagen is one of redemption.
Dubbed Sunny Side, this web-spot is VW's warmup of sorts for what promises to be another blockbuster year in the world of Super Bowl commercials. Without giving away the game, the euphonious commercial sees Cliff opening his arms and his heart to some YouTube 'celebrities' that might see courser treatment from the likes of Tosh.0, for instance. We can't help but be reminded of Coca-Cola's legendary 1971 Hilltop spot with the "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" lyric, too.
Enjoy the pre-Super Bowl VW spot below, and don't forget to pay it forward... your karma will thank you. For those of you that just can't get enough of commercial-making magic, we've included a "making-of" video, as well.

Official: Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid nab five-star ratings from NHTSA
Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Safety, Ford
Ford's Fusion and Fusion Hybrid have both received the highest five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The rating is a big upgrade for the Fusion, which was completely redesigned for 2013. The previous model fell one star short of the top rating, after scoring only three stars in the frontal crash test and four stars in the side crash test and rollover evaluations. The 2013 Fusion received four stars in side crash and rollover testing and a full five stars in the front crash test.
Test results for the 2013 Fusion and Fusion Hybrid were greatly improved at least in part due to Ford's Personal Safety System. The system utilizes smarter sensors to gather crash data and tailor the car's restraint systems to the occupants. Seatbelt usage and seat position are taken into account to ensure airbags deploy with less pressure for smaller drivers, more for larger drivers.
The 2013 Fusion twins also received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+ designation. Read the official press release below.
