Video: Ford shows off Mustang Shelby GT500's new launch control

2013 Shelby GT500 burnout

Listen to the sage words of the late Carroll Shelby: "650 horsepower? Nobody else has it." We're guessing this footage was recorded a little while back, before the final certified rating of the 5.8-liter supercharged engine in the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 came in at 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet of torque.

Indeed, there isn't a single car anywhere near the sticker price of the 2013 GT500 - not even the stupid-fast Chevy Corvette ZR1 - that offers as many horses under the hood as the most powerful production Mustang in history. Suffice it to say, reeling in 662 galloping ponies and sending them to the rear tires isn't an easy conundrum to solve.

And that's where launch control comes into play. It's a cool system, allowing the driver to alter the RPM held by the engine with the clutch depressed. Drop the clutch and, instead of watching your Goodyear F1 Supercar tires go the way of the Dodo, you hook up and take off down the drag strip.

Or, ya know, you could turn the system off and smoke bomb your neighborhood. See examples of both launch techniques in the video below, because whenever a video starts off with a prominent disclaimer, you know it's going to be good.

Official: Audi R8 E-Tron laps 'Ring in record-setting 8:09, celebrates silently

Audi R8 E-tron at Nurburgring in front of record lap time billboard

Two months ago, the Audi R8 E-Tron was caught at the Nürburgring, getting its gumption up for what everyone has come to consider The Obligatory Timed Lap of Destiny. The lap has been completed with Markus Winkelhock at the wheel, and the result is a world record for a series production electric car: eight minutes and 9.099 seconds. If you believe in Wikipedia's list of 'Ring lap times, that puts the R8 E-Tron with its 375 horsepower and stupefying torque 25 seconds behind the R8 V10, five seconds adrift of the eight-cylinder R8, and in the same company as the Audi RS4 and previous generation BMW M6.

If we ignore the fact that you can't buy an R8 E-Tron yet, the hot lap car "corresponds in every detail" to the one you will be able to buy at the end of this year. Well, not exactly: customer cars will be speed-limited to 200 kph (125 mph), but for the 'Ring run, the limiter was raised to 250 kph. More practical numbers for civilian jaunts are the 0-to-62 mph time of 4.6 seconds and a 134-mile range when fully charged.

More important to all of us will be the video footage of its triumph, which we hope to see very soon. In the meantime, there's the obligatory press release of destiny below.

Video: Watch how an Ariel Atom 300 defines trackday perfection

Ariel Atom 300

It has no roof, no windshield and no doors. It doesn't matter. The Ariel Atom is the absolute perfect way to experience the simple pleasure of a day at the race track on four wheels.

Though it's available with as many as 500 horsepower, even the 300-hp model is able to accelerate from a dead stop to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds. That's impressive, to say the least, and the best news is that the rest of the car's statistics are just as amazing, thanks to a fully adjustable suspension system, sticky rubber at all four corners and powerful brakes.

In other words, the Atom 300 has everything you need to go fast at a race track and nothing you don't... and it's even possible to get it registered for the street. Watch the video below to find out what makes Car and Driver suggest that the Atom "may be one of the least practical cars ever, but also one of the most exciting."

Motorsports: Le Mans rule changes for 2014 announced, engine restrictions eased

Audi R18 e-tron

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest, organizer of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has announced a number of rule changes for the 2014 race that open up the options for LMP1 racers and guide their technology closer to that of road cars, and that should also give fans even better racing than we're used to seeing. Probably biggest of all is loosening the restraints on engine design. Currently, gas engines are limited in size to 3.4 liters, while diesel displacement can be no more than 3.7 liters, with further turbocharger, supercharger and air restrictor regulation on top of that. Those are all gone - "The limitations of cylinders, restrictors and turbo pressures are removed."

Before you get ideas of this turning into a Group B for Le Mans, the cars will be limited to an "energy allotment" per lap. A fuel meter will allow a diesel-powered car 3.99 liters per lap, a gas-powered car would get 4.95 liters per lap, from tanks that are about 12 percent smaller.

All LMP1 cars will be required to have closed cockpits, within which the driver will sit a little further forward and slightly higher to provide more visibility and, it is hoped, cut down on accidents when lapping slower traffic. Weights have been reduced, from the current minimum weight of 900 kilograms to 830 kg for non-hybrids and 850 kg for hybrids, and according to the Speed TV report, "all factory entries will be required to compete with hybrid systems." The cars will also be thinnner. Another factory handicap (depending on how see it) is that "super-exotic materials" will be banned in order to force carmakers to use materials that apply to their mainstream vehicles and not just their supercars.

The ACO believes these new rules will "encourage the development of powerful and spectacular cars and also the development of technologies that have real meaning for the everyday motorist." Sounds good to us.

Report: Honda "losing money" on Japan-built cars like Fit, CR-Z and Insight

2012 Honda Fit Sport - red - front three-quarter static view

Automotive News reports Honda is currently limiting shipments of models like the Fit, CR-Z and Insight due to Japan's strong yen. The automaker admits it is currently losing money on every Japanese-built model it sells in the U.S. with the exchange rate currently at 80 yen per dollar. Honda is currently working to move more production to North America and source more components from this side of the Pacific, though such a shift will take time. In the interim, the manufacturer is carefully allocating Japanese-manufactured models. Honda says it has no intention to cut off Fit, CR-Z or Insight shipments altogether.

Honda builds around 85 percent of the vehicles it sells in North America on the continent, which is significantly more than companies like Nissan or Toyota. Even so, this marks the first time Honda has gone on the record as saying importing cars from Japan costs more money than it makes.

So, why sell these models at all? Automotive News reports Honda needs the vehicles to keep segments covered and to keep its customers coming back to showrooms.

Franchitti lauds Texas aero decision

Dario Franchitti believes that IndyCar has hit upon a perfect compromise with the final aero tweak that was made for Saturday's race at Texas Motor Speedway. The series has been working to cut down the potential for pack racing at the 1.5-mile oval to reduce the chance of an accident similar to that which claimed the life of Dan Wheldon at Las Vegas last year. IndyCar began the weekend by imposing a maximum rear wing angle of minus five degrees and, following consultation with drivers, also banned the use of gurney flaps on the rear wing.

How GM got 3 more miles out of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

2011 Chevy Volt red

As we learned earlier today, the 2013 Chevrolet Volt has beefed up. The new model year vehicle has a "bigger" battery and can go three extra miles when driven solely on the battery. We spoke with GM representatives to get more information on the model year updates as well as answers to some of your questions (e.g., don't expect E85 capability, once promised for the first-gen Volt, any time soon).

Volt chief engineer Andrew Farah said there is a reason that the focus today was on the car's improved all-electric range: It was the number one request from customers. Three miles is incremental, but "it will enable more people to go gasoline-free in their daily driving," said Farah, and those miles "add up over a week." Farah wouldn't talk about how many more miles we can expect in the 2014 Volt, just that, "my expectations are that we would see larger improvements with model changes." Importantly, Farah said that the EPA made no major changes to the test procedures, so it is legit to compare the 2013 MPGe number to earlier ratings.

The new battery is not any heavier or larger, just "electrically bigger."

The extra range comes from a different battery chemistry as well as a slightly bigger battery, 16.5 kWh instead of 16. Farah said the battery is not literally any bigger (i.e., it's not any heavier or larger), just "electrically bigger." The .5-kWh growth seems small, but from a "battery guy's standpoint," nothing is small and no one should expect any dramatic changes from future versions of the Volt's current-generation battery, just continued incremental changes, said GM's director of global battery systems engineering, Bill Wallace. He added that GM is always looking into how much more energy they can wring out of the battery, but are not yet wiling to talk about how much more could be pulled out in the future. He did hint there is more to be had, though, saying that, "battery life is not as sensitive as we previously thought."

Other changes in the new Volt are more minor. There is now an optional arm rest between the two back seats. A new power gauge in the dash shows more information about where the energy used to move the car is coming from, how much is from the battery and how much is from the gas tank. We already talked about the collision alert and lane departure warnings as well as the new standard "hold mode." The 2013 model also has new interior and exterior colors (pebble beige and silver topaz metallic, respectively) and new sport alloy wheels, which were actually available late in the 2012 MY.

2013 Chevy Volt Detail photoshopFor some reason, GM has not yet released photos of the 2013 Volt, even though they will be instantly noticeable from the rear and above since the roof and liftgate on the new Volt will now match the body color (they used to be black). All GM has released is a small Photoshopped crop, seen right, of the new backside (click image to see the unmodified version below).

The 2013 Volt goes on sale in August. GM said there has been no change in pricing or destination fees compared to 2012 model. You can see pricing details below as well as in the gallery.

Report: Maserati Quattroporte to get Ferrari-built supercharged V6, turbo V8

Maserati Quattroporte test mule

According to Car and Driver, the next-generation Maserati Quattroporte is slated to get two all-new forced-induction engines sourced from Ferrari.

At launch, the Quattroporte will be introduced with its range-topping engine, a 5.2-liter turbocharged V8, good for something like 520 horsepower. That's all well and fine, but the big news is that a smaller, supercharged V6 will launch shortly thereafter, pumping out around 420 horsepower. That's right, Ferrari will be making a V6.

C/D reports that the supercharged V6 comes from the group that is heading up the development of Ferrari's new 1.6-liter turbocharged six for use in future Formula One racers. This new 420-hp engine is said to be about 30 percent more efficient than the V8 currently found in the Ferrari California. The Quattroporte itself is tipped to be about 450 pounds lighter than its predecessor, which should also help in the efficiency department.

Both engines will be available with a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission. The current car's automated manual transmission option will no longer be offered.

We've seen the automaker's forthcoming Q-ship out testing on a number of occasions, and C/D believes that the new car will officially bow at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Video: Watch Audi's A1 Quattro get thrashed on gravel roads

German magazine Sport Auto got its mitts on an Audi A1 Quattro, then tested the limited-edition hot hatch for high speed and gravel prowess. With 252 horsepower and 258 pound-feet underhood from its 2.0 TSFI engine, it's slightly down on gumption from the 500-horsepower A1 Clubsport that Audi showed off at the Wörthersee and Le Mans last year, but the bewinged A1 Quattro will still get from standstill to 62 mph in 5.7 seven seconds and onto a GPS-indicated 257 kph (159 mph).

The A1 Quattro is a little longer than the traditional A1 and it will come packed with enhanced trim, a 456-watt stereo and metallic-white paint, but we're still awaiting the small detail of pricing. Only 333 examples are to be produced, and you can see one of them in the video below.

Official: Vth supercharges the Mercedes-Benz C63 Black to 756 ludicrous horsepower

Vath V63 Supercharged

With 6.2 liters of capacity and 510 horsepower on tap, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series would be enough for most any speed freak to play around with. But the tuners at Väth have taken it even further with a series of modifications.

For starters, Väth has supercharged the V8 up to 756 horsepower which is able to propel the beast to 62 miles per hour in just 3.6 seconds and on to a 217-mph top speed - good for those romps down the Autobahn. A stainless steel exhaust system, as well as new cats, silencers and exhaust tips are also on offer. An adjustable suspension is part of the package, as are upgraded rolling stock - 20-inch alloys on ultra-low-profile rubber - and (thankfully) upgraded brakes to keep it all in check.

The result is the V63 Supercharged, and buyers can select the individual upgrades they desire, along with an array of interior options. Check out the full press release below for all the details.

Official: 2013 Ford F-150 debuts with slight enhancements

Ford
officially took the wraps off the 2013 Ford F-150 this morning in Waco, Texas.

While not a dramatic overhaul, the new F-150, which arrives later this year, includes a number of enhancements, including new grilles that are part of a fully made-over front facia, giving the pickup a closer family resemblance to the Super Duty. Ford has also added high-intensity discharge headlamps as an option for 2013. There will also be some new 18- and 20-inch wheel choices, as well as the addition of MyFord Touch inside the cab of the F-150.

The incremental changes to Ford's top-selling F-Series is one way the automaker keeps its pickups fresh, Doug Scott, head of Ford truck marketing marketing, told Autoblog. Instead of waiting for the next scheduled refreshing, Ford pushes new features into vehicles whenever they are available. Last year, Ford overhauled its powertrain options for the F-150, adding two V6 options.

Truck buyers appear to like Ford's approach. For the past 13 months, more than half of all F-150s sold have had either a 3.7-liter V6 or Ford's well-received 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 under their hoods.

Full-size pickups represent the fourth-largest segment in the United States, and Scott said the company thinks it could grow into the third-largest segment in the coming years. "We're tracking 1.6 million truck sales this year (for the segment)," Scott said. "For our longer-term projections, 2 million is not out of the question."

For the full details on the refreshed F-150, scroll down for the official press release, and check out the new features for yourself in the high-res image gallery above.

Report: 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth sold out

2012 Fiat 500 Abarth in white with red trim - at speed, front three-quarter view

Eager to get your hands on the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth? Get in line, and be warned: you're going to have to wait.

According to The Detroit News, Chrysler has stopped taking wholesale orders on the 2012 model year 500 Abarth. According to sources within the automaker, customers who plunk down the money for the hotted-up 500 right now will be put on the 2013 model year waiting list, with those cars expected to arrive in the fall. In a statement to the Motown newspaper, Chrysler officials simply said that the number of orders received "exceeded the production run of this model for the 2012 model year."

Chrysler had originally planned to build about 1,000 Abarth models for the 2012 model year. However, those cars were all spoken for by the end of April - the Abarth's first month on sale - so the automaker upped production to 3,000 units. According to the Detroit News, this was the maximum number of units that the Fiat factory in Toluca, Mexico could handle.

Scott Dixon won a bizarre IndyCar race around the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit, where severe problems with the track surface forced a two-hour delay just as the event approached its scheduled halfway point. Ganassi driver Dixon started from pole and led every lap, but the race will be remembered for the enormous strips of asphalt that were torn from the track's surface, forcing race control to call for a red flag to allow track workers to implement a fix. The trackwork came too late for Andretti Autosport's James Hinchcliffe, who hit a chunk of the debris and was spat into the tyres on lap 45
