Symonds? return a boost for Marussia

Timo Glock expects Pat Symonds' clearance to return to the Formula 1 paddock in 2013 to be a major boost to Marussia. Symonds was banned from F1 in the wake of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix scandal, in which he was one of those held responsible for Nelson Piquet being asked to deliberately crash his Renault to trigger a safety car that would help team-mate Fernando Alonso win . Although not permitted to attend grands prix in that period, Symonds was given clearance to work as a consultant to F1 teams - a role he has performed for Marussia.

Video: Watch Motor Trend give the 2013 SRT Viper a thrashing

SRT Viper

It's no secret the boys and girls at Motor Trend don't look at the 2013 SRT Viper through rose-tinted lenses. After all, the publication recently chose the Corvette ZR1 over the new supercar from Chrysler, saying the Chevrolet was easier to drive quickly. That's bad news given there's a new Corvette coming down the pike. But until now, we haven't been able to watch Motor Trend give the Viper a proper thrashing. Carlos Lago hopped behind the wheel of the V10-powered bruiser to give the machine a once-over.

While Chrysler has made big waves about the Viper's improved interior, Lago wasn't too impressed, saying there's plenty of the old car in the cabin. With a pedal box pushed toward the driver's side, a rough ride and a noisy cockpit, MT found that the Viper lags behind its European counterparts, but there's certainly no arguing against the machine's straight-line thrust. The magazine managed to rip off a 3.4-second 0-60 mph time during testing.

In the end, Lago finds that the Viper still earns its brutish reputation, but is somewhat more controllable. Check out the review for yourself below, including a segment with pro Randy Pobst at Laguna Seca.

Report: Why men in the US still pay more for auto insurance [w/poll]

Men vs. Women insurance rates

It's not just your imagination - insurance premiums in the United States are still higher for men than they are for women. According to a recent study of 5,000 quotes conducted by Onlineautoinsurance.com (OAI), auto insurance quotes for men are still about 23 percent pricier than women's on average. Plus, if a man and a woman with the identical driver profiles (same driving record, age and vehicle) received quotes for the same coverage, the man's quote would be more expensive 62 percent of the time.

As expected, it was young men (under 25) who paid the brunt of the cost, with an average premium of $676 more than their young female counterparts when the quotes differed - keep in mind that men and women were offered the identical premiums 27 percent of the time and women were quoted higher in 11 percent of the cases.

While figuring out why men often pay more still isn't completely clear, experts cite statistics showing that men and women drive differently. Not only do men spend more time behind the wheel (they drive about 1.5 times as many miles), but they are more likely to violate laws for speeding, yielding and passing. Plus, they take more risks (males were involved in 1.25 million more crashes in 2010).

Interestingly enough, courts in the European Union have decided that "differences in insurance pricing based purely on a person's sex are discriminatory;" a new Gender Directive is officially in effect and it will change premiums for policyholders. The US is unlikely to follow its lead, as insurance companies in the States are typically allowed to use rating factors (those that correlate with actual risk), despite the obvious controversy.

Considering the statistics, do you think men should pay more for car insurance than women? Take part in our informal poll below.

Romain Grosjean's acceptance that he needed to change his ways in Formula 1 was a key factor in helping him convince his Lotus chiefs to keep him for next year, AUTOSPORT has learned. Team principal Eric Boullier has revealed that Grosjean's on-track incidents had weighed heavy in the team's decision about his future - but that the French driver's willingness to learn and improve helped convince it that he was worth sticking with.

Vaughn Rocks Zolder

Week Seven brought the iRacing.com Skip Barber Series to Circuit-Zolder. Located in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium, the ten turn 2.492 mile (4.011 km) circuit includes a few sweeping and fast turns broken apart by three tight chicanes and a hairpin. They Spin and Hightower Wins

Week Seven of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (fixed setup) made a trip to the Iowa Speedway for some online racing at one of NASCAR’s finest racing venues. Almost 1,550 sim racers attempted at least one race during the seven days of racing, but as with most competitive events, there can only be one number one. This week’s high Strength of Field event was one for the ages. It involved beating, banging, crashing, and an unlikely winner. What more can you ask for in a race? As the classic racing phrase states, “It doesn’t matter how many laps you lead if you don’t lead the last one.” That held a solid truth during this week’s 4035 Strength of Field as race winner Jordan Hightower (Mid-South) led only one lap [...]

Crawford looked to have the dominant car, leading a race high 112 laps, but could not get back around Laughton once he was passed on pit road. Are you the production Gumpert Tornante?

Gumpert Tornante

A few trademark drawings of what could be the production Gumpert Tornante have shown up on the internet. As you may recall, the supercar manufacturer recently made its way through insolvency largely unscathed and is already back to building Apollo models. But it looks like that isn't all the company is up to. The team at WorldCarFans managed to lay its mitts on a trademark drawing that shows what looks to be an evolution of the Gumpert Tornante by Touring Concept that debuted at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Designers have scrapped the concept's split rear window in favor louvered back glass, and the vehicle's exhaust seems to have received a substantial revision as well. While it's unclear exactly what sort of drivetrain the production Tornante will offer, it's concept predecessor came packing a twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 engine producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 700 horsepower. The mill was bolted to a TT40e six-speed semi-automatic gearbox. Sounds like a party.

Brad Keselowski believes Penske's switch to Ford will provide a much-needed boost to motivation levels following his 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup title success. The 28-year-old became Penske's first Cup champion in the final round of the season at Homestead, triumphing after nearest rival Jimmie Johnson hit trouble. Speaking during Tuesday's test at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Penske has started its transition from Dodge to Ford , he admitted it would be easy for energy and drive to slip in the wake of the team's triumph.
