Official: AEV turns Wrangler into Brute Double Cab for SEMA
Filed under: Aftermarket, SEMA Show, Jeep, Off-Road
Jeep pickup trucks are griffins. Amalgamated kings of all automotive beasts that combine the friendly puppy vibe of a Wrangler with the utility of a cargo box. Ten years ago, American Expedition Vehicles gave the public the original TJ-based Brute at that year's SEMA show, and now the company is reprising that performance and introducing the Brute Double Cab.
Based on the latest JK Wrangler Unlimited, the Brute Double Cab offers more interior space thanks to the extra doors and the larger overall dimensions of the JK-series Wrangler. AEV stretches the frame to a 139-inch wheelbase, and the Brute Double Cab has an overall length of 216 inches - 30 inches more than a regular JK Unlimited. The bed is nearly square, with dimensions of 61 inches long by 60 inches wide (and 44 inches between the wheelhouses), but it's not intended to make a pickup truck replacement out of a Jeep.
AEV thinks the Brute Double Cab is an off-roader with better chops than a 4x4 pickup, and enhanced cargo capacity over what you can get from stock Jeeps. Unlike the JK-8 Independence kit you can buy from Mopar, the Brute Double Cab isn't something you assemble yourself - AEV puts more into its four-door Brute Double Cab than it takes to build the two-door JK-8 kit. The stretched-chassis AEV Brute Double Cab will be available first to current AEV owners as a turn-key vehicle. Once production ramps up, availability will be opened to the public at large. Get the full scoop in the release after the jump.

Report: How Steve Jobs got away with not having a license plate
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal, Celebrities
Among the many myths surrounding the notoriously private life of Steve Jobs was his disdain for license plates. Jobs reportedly drove a Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG without ever affixing a plate, leading many to speculate that Apple's powerful CEO had cut some back room deal with California's DMV, or that he had some high-tech bar code plate on his car, or that he just didn't mind paying whatever citations he received for his different thinking.
Now we have a report that claims to settle the issue once and for all, and explain how you too can drive plate-less in California if you're so inclined.

Video: Top Gear Korea is better than you might think
Filed under: Etc., Videos, South Korea
We know, we know... you miss Top Gear. We do, too. But there won't be another new episode until December, and the new season isn't expected to start until January. So what are we to do in the meantime? Well, we could watch re-runs, but we've seen 'em all. We could watch the American version - and many of us do - but, you know - it's still not the same. Neither is Fifth Gear, for that matter. Fortunately the sun never sets on the Top Gear empire, and today there are different series set up in locations around the world.
As far as we can tell, in addition to the original on the BBC and the History Channel version we get here, there are also series in Russia, China, Germany and Korea. There was also an Australian series, but it was recently cancelled, meaning we have no other series available to us in English.
But does that mean we can't enjoy them? Well, maybe, but the Korean series, for example, isn't half bad - whether you understand Korean or not. The cinematography and production quality strike us as better than most of the spin-offs, if not quite as good as the original. But don't take our word for it: we've placed a few segments after the jump for your viewing pleasure. Like what you see? There's plenty more where that came from - just head on over to Top Gear Korea's YouTube channel.

Official: Mopar rolling in to SEMA with Challenger ACR, Ram 392 and more
Filed under: Aftermarket, SEMA Show, Coupe, Sedan, Performance, SUV, Truck, Hatchback, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ram
Since the Chrysler Group joined up with Fiat, its brand portfolio has grown to include Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep and Fiat vehicles. And you know what that means: more stuff for Mopar to tinker with. That's just what Auburn Hills has got in store for the upcoming SEMA show in Vegas, with a whole slew of show cars to demonstrate just what the group's performance parts division can do.
The Chrysler brand itself will be represented by the 300 SF6, dedicated to the Spring Festival of Chrysler 300 owners in Southern California. It's distinguished by 22-inch alloys, a KW coil-over suspension and upgraded brakes, intake, headers and exhaust - all from the Mopar parts bin - plus special trim inside and out.
Over at Dodge, the Challenger SRT8 gets the ACR treatment with upgraded suspension, shifter, front splitter, exhaust and 20-inch wheels, capped by a paint job evocative of the much-loved Viper ACR. It's joined by the Durango Tow Hook, decked out in orange and black with 22-inch rolling stock on a dropped suspension.
Fiat continues to make the most of the 500 with two specials called Titanium and Carbon. The former takes its name from the matte-finish brightwork and 16-inch wheels that contrast with the black paint, with enlarged grilles feeding the upgraded intake and exhaust systems. The latter, meanwhile, decks out a 500 Sport in deep blue with carbon-fiber accents and blacked-out trim and 17-inch alloys, riding on a lowered suspension.
Finally, the Ram division is represented by the 392 Quick Silver, dropping a 470-horsepower Hemi V8 into the Ram R/T's engine bay. 22-inch wheels on a lowered suspension house 15-inch Brembo brakes to keep it under control, with a body glazed in silver with red accents and a black roof to do the talking.
These are just five of the 30 "Moparized" vehicles Chrysler will be displaying at the aftermarket expo, and while they've only released four renderings to keep us tantalized, you can scope out all the details in the press release after the jump.

Video: Watch a 2011 Lexus IS-F be unceremoniously crushed
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Government/Legal, Lexus, Luxury
Filed under the old Batman adage, "Crime Doesn't Pay," here we have a Lexus IS-F being sacrificed for the sins of its owner. Seems someone was caught street racing by California authorities, and they didn't appreciate it. So they relieved the offender of one mighty red IS-F and then didn't send it to an auction or a good home, but straight to hell. Slowly. There's a one-minute video with simple instructions on how to make Lexus pepperoni after the jump.

Video: Audi e-tron Spyder struts its stuff in Malibu
Filed under: Concept Cars, Convertible, Videos, Audi, Design/Style, Electric, Diesel
There is a lot to love about the 2014 Audi e-tron Spyder. It's a compact roadster with a torque-happy, twin-turbo diesel V6 mated to two electric motors capable of more instant twist. When we recently took the e-tron Spyder for a spin, we were limited to just 40 miles per hour, but the Four-Ringed automaker tells us that a trip to 62 takes only 4.4 seconds.
And because this Spyder is a green monster, it can travel up to 30 miles on electric power alone. Using a mixture of the diesel and its lithium ion battery, it will consume on average a scant 2.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers.
That sounds like a lot of "too good to be true," but Audi promises to be the leader in luxury electric cars by 2020, and a production version of this vehicle is expected for 2014. Hit the jump to watch new footage of the e-tron Spyder in motion. It might not be ready to go on sale, but it at least looks mighty fine on the roads of Malibu, California, near where we drove it.

Study: Car buffs more likely to be aggressive drivers. In other news, grass green, sky blue
A new study published online in the Journal of Psychology & Marketing tells us what most gearheads already know: If you perceive your car as extension of self, you're more likely to drive aggressively.
Unsurprising to us, yes, but also to Ayalla Ruvio, lead author of "Aggressive Driving: A Consumption Experience." In a statement released by Temple University, she admits that her study "explains much of the phenomenon we knew existed." An assistant professor of marketing at Temple's Fox School of Business, Ruvio conducted her research - which consisted of surveying fewer than 300 people - in Israel.
Ruvio's astute command of the obvious extends to determining that "young people who are in the early stages of forming their self-identity might feel the need to show off their car and driving skills more than others" and "a sense of being under time and pressure leads to more aggressive driving."
Click through the jump to read the full release, wherein Ruvio also name-checks Shania Twain and Thelma and Louise.
