Martin gives Ford first pole of 2011

A superb last-gasp lap from Maxime Martin put the #41 Marc VDS Ford on pole position for the GT1 World Championship qualifying race at Ordos in China. Richard Westbrook looked like he had done enough to give himself and JRM Nissan team-mate Peter Dumbreck a second straight pole as he set a lap of 1m38.669s in Q3 and then headed for the pits with a minute still to run. While most were already back in their garages, Martin mounted a final pole shot as the chequered flag fell.

Capirossi announces retirement

Loris Capirossi will retire from motorcycle racing at the end of the season. The 38-year-old Italian made the announcement at Misano during the build-up to the San Marino Grand Prix, almost breaking down in tears at the time. "It's difficult for me to say this, because after 22 seasons this will be my last race in Italy because at the end of the year, I will retire," he said, before receiving a standing ovation in the circuit press room
