Official: Land Rover previews new Defender with Frankfurt-bound DC100 concept
Filed under: Concept Cars, Frankfurt Motor Show, SUV, Land Rover, Off-Road
Few vehicles have been on (or off) the road as long as the Land Rover Defender. It's one of those few true icons of the automobile, and replacing it will be no easy task. But that's precisely what Land Rover is gearing up to do.
Capable as the outgoing Defender is, you see, it hardly teeters on the cutting edge of the industry. Which is why JLR is committing to its replacement in 2015. And to give us an idea of what we might expect, the company is preparing to unveil this concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
All we've got to go on with the show truck called the DC100 is the solitary image above and the press release after the jump, which is rather short on details. It seems to borrow a few cues from the FJ Cruiser but with a slightly cleaner, leaner form that looks like it'd be as at home on a California beach as it would on a snowy mountain top.
This is one truck we'll be looking forward to seeing up close and personal - fortunately, it won't be long now.

UAW President Bob King has already alluded to the fact that his organization may have to settle for profit-sharing agreements instead of wage increases during this round of talks. Walkowitz, meanwhile, says that he'll wait to read exactly how the new agreement is phrased before deciding whether or not a strike is prudent.
Despite how well negotiations are progressing, union workers at Ford have agreed to vote on the strike authorization. Conversely, workers at Chrysler and General Motors have both taken the possibility of a strike off the table.

Comparo: Audi A7 3.0T takes on the Mercedes-Benz CLS550
Filed under: Coupe, Sedan, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Luxury, Comparisons
Which Is Better Depends On Where You're Sitting"This car has an identity crisis. The aggressive exterior, brash exhaust note and firm ride say 'sport,' but the interior screams 'grandma!'"
These two vehicles have met head-to-head before, but not on these pages. To make things a bit more interesting, the decision was made to review these "four-door coupes" not only from the driver's perspective, but from all four seating positions. The unique comparison would require each of the vehicles to carry 700-plus pounds of passengers comfortably from the flatlands of the hot LA Basin up to the cool mile-high elevations of Big Bear Lake and back. The winner would be determined by a simple vote.
As this task called for six warm bodies willing to be chauffeured 160 miles over a long afternoon, Autoblog's Facebook page was enlisted to recruit. Within 24 hours, we had our six smiling volunteers fingered.

Video: 2012 BMW M5 tackles Laguna Seca
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Videos, BMW
A 2012 BMW M5 and free rein at California's legendary Laguna Seca circuit sounds like a near-perfect way to spend a day. BMW agrees with that line of thinking, and it was kind enough to bring a long a camera. Well, you could easily replace "kind" with "annoyingly torturous" since we aren't the ones wearing the helmet and driving suit.
Regardless, we still enjoyed the clip and we think you will too - especially when you hear just how ruthlessly the sound from 560-horsepower twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 assaults your eardrums. Click past the jump to check it out.

Monterey: Peter Mullin's 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne named 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Best of Show
Filed under: Classics
The judges at this year's 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance have been searching all day to find this year's 'Best in Show', and they have finally come up with a winner. Peter Mullin's 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne earned the title after being named the best car in the 1932-1937 European Classic category. Yes, the same Peter Mullin of the renowned Mullin Automotive Museum.
Haven't heard of Voisin? Founded by Gabriel Voisin, one of the leading European engineers and aerodynamicists at the turn of the 20th century, the company first manufactured airplanes before building automobiles after World War I. Their debut car, the C-2, was launched at the Paris motor show in 1920.
The C-25 was unveiled more than a decade later at the Paris Motor Show, featuring a 3.0-liter inline-6 producing just over 100 horsepower. Three design variants were made including the Cimier, Clariere and our featured example, the Aerodyne. Just 28 examples of the C-25 were ever produced, making it a very rare and desirable car.
You can view our photos of Peter Mullin's 1934 Voisin C-25 Aerodyne at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in the high-res gallery above.

Monterey: Delahaye USA debuts Bugatti-inspired Bella Figura prototype
Filed under: Classics, Coupe, Luxury
Delahaye USA has been at work developing and building the Bella Figura, a modern tribute to the Bugatti Type 57S, for more than three years. The company has finally (mostly) finished the prototype, and presented it to the public for the very first time at this year's Quail Motorsports Gathering.
Built on a custom chassis developed by the Roadster Shop in Mundelein, IL, the Bella Figura is available as a complete car, a turnkey-minus (without engine and transmission) or as a rolling chassis. Delahaye USA also offers right or left hand drive versions, and either a composite or aluminum body.
Company founder Terry Cook tells us that they're currently taking orders and should be able to deliver the first customer car by the end of the year. As for pricing, the Bella Figura starts reasonably but can be as expensive as you want to make it. A chassis and low-cost composite body runs under $50,000, but Delahaye USA says that a complete, alloy-bodied car will cost around $450,000. You can view more details and options over at www.DelahayeUSA.com.

Designer imagines a motorcycle for Hyundai
Filed under: Concept Cars, Etc., Hyundai, Motorcycle, Design/Style
Designer Min Seong Kim envisions a rather interesting world where Hyundai, alongside its automobiles and heavy equipment, also builds motorcycles.
The structure of the bike is, in true conceptual fashion, made of a material that can tighten or relax, which the designer believes would aid in steering similar to the way our muscles aid in... well, pretty much everything we do. There's a cage around the rider, apparently to aid in protection, but we wonder how easy that would be to see around. The six-cylinder powerplant sports bold HYUNDAI lettering across the valve covers, and probably comes with a great warranty as well.
We do have a problem with the rider, however, who is clearly rooting for a different motorcycle manufacturer. There's nothing wrong with Suzuki bikes, but if you're going to be shilling for a futuristic manufacturer, you should also be wearing their branded leathers. Regardless, the concept is interesting from all angles, and you can check it out for yourself in the gallery.

Report: Chrysler restarts engineering program at Kettering University
Filed under: Chrysler
Chrysler is re-establishing a partnership with Kettering University in Flint, Michigan, for students in the automotive engineering program. This relationship was put on hold in 2008 when the automaker began its financial crisis.
Kettering's co-op program is a five-year-long process in which students alternate between work and school terms every three months. This fall, 16 students from Kettering will enter the program, and will stay with Chrysler from their freshman year all the way until graduation.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Chrysler's re-establishment with Kettering is part of the automaker's plan to expand its ties with college engineering programs across the country. In a statement, Chrysler's senior vice president of human resources, Nancy Rae, said that the company is "excited and proud to continue our relationship with the university and its students."

Followup: Owner left with bill for burnt BMW after Vancouver riots
The Vancouver riot was a disgraceful act that played out in an otherwise wonderful Canadian city. Violent rage filled the streets, and misguided idiots turned their furious attention to local property in the form of store fronts and automobiles. One particular automobile was a black BMW M5 belonging to Jazmin Perez, who fought hard to try and keep the masses away from her German super sedan. Unfortunately for Perez, the ruthless mob didn't relent and her expensive machine burnt to the ground. Her saga doesn't end there, however, because Jazmin Perez is now on the hook for thousands of dollars worth of damages.
The BMW M5 in question was leased to Perez, who had insurance to cover the market value of the car. With her car now torched and ruined, Perez now needs to pay the difference between the insurance payout (fair market value) and the remaining balance she owes on her lease. The total she owes is reportedly in the thousands of dollars. Her insurance company and the leasing company both say they understand this was not her fault, yet contracts are contracts and Perez is the one who signed on the dotted line.
We feel for Perez in this situation. Mostly because she now owes thousands on a car that was destroyed by idiots, but especially because that car was a BMW M5.
Head over to CBC News for video of Jazmin Perez discussing her situation.
